History of Wheat Ridge

A collection of gold prospectors turned farmers began to settle in the Wheat Ridge area in 1859. The community supported the nearby coal and ore mining operations by supplying produce and dairy products to the mining crews. The Wheat Ridge Historical Society and Colorado Historical Society are in the process of restoring an original log cabin from this time known as the Baugh Cabin and hope to have the restoration completed before 2008.

Later, the fertile soil and abundant water in the region made the farming community the chief source of fresh produce for the Denver area before and through World War II.  In the postwar decades of the late 1940’s and 1950’s Wheat Ridge became a world wide source in the carnation growing industry.

In 1905, a tuberculosis sanatorium was established in Wheat Ridge for Evangelic Lutherans who set up other social service programs and opened a training center for social workers and chaplains. The tradition of service and outreach continues today in the Exempla-Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge which employs over 2500 people.

In 1969, when nearby cities wanted to annex Wheat Ridge, the city was incorporated and in 1977 the residents instituted a home rule charter.

Culture and Recreation

Wheat Ridge skirts the city of Denver but has a diverse array of dining, cultural and recreational opportunities of its own. There are countless franchises, coffee shops, delis and diners as well as locally owned restaurants to choose from with a dazzling range of ethnic as well as elegant eateries.  The town has five retail centers with nationally known stores and shops and also areas with one-of-a-kind boutiques and trendy shops. Antiques and collectibles, consignment shops and a co-op antiques mall can be found on Wheat Ridge’s 44th Avenue. Wheat Ridge borders on two dynamic Denver neighborhoods: Berkley and Highlands.  These areas add an interesting array of shops and restaurants to Wheat Ridge’s already ample choices.

Outdoor enthusiasts can appreciate the town’s 20 parks and the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt, 300 acres of open space surrounding the city, has hiking, biking and equestrian trails. The 71,000 square foot Wheat Ridge Recreation Center offers a leisure pool, lap pool, game room, jogging walking track, climbing wall, racquetball courts and Children’s Pavilion.

Every August the city hosts the Carnation Festival to honor Wheat Ridge’s once thriving carnation industry. Visitors from all over the state attend this event which includes a parade, food, games, craft exhibits, bands and fireworks.
