History of Littleton

A large influx of people came to Littleton in 1859 due to the gold rush. Many original residents really thought they were going to strike it rich finding gold, and others came to Littleton to provide goods and services to the gold-seekers.

A man named Richard Sullivan Little was an engineer who helped design a water transportation system from local rivers to the Littleton area so that farmers and places of business would have access to water. The city was eventually named after Mr. Little.

The first major economically stable business in Littleton was a flower mill that was opened and run by the Littles and others in the community. The mill was very successful for many years. When the railroad was finally able to access Littleton in 1871, people began flocking to the area in even greater numbers.

In 1890, Littleton was officially incorporated and given the official, “Town of Littleton” name. Over the course of many years, the main industry in Littleton was agriculture. However, after World War II and the Industrial Revolution, Littleton became an area that specialized in electronics and the manufacturing of several types of items.

Today, Littleton’s population is above 40,000 and the area is home to Arapahoe Community College, Chatfield Reservoir, and many large corporations.
