History of Niwot
Niwot has a layered history which begins with its Native American roots. The town is named for Chief Niwot, an Arapaho tribal leader who settled in Left Hand Creek area just three miles west of Niwot and whose name means “left hand” in the Arapaho language.
The village of Niwot was platted in 1875 just two years after the Colorado Central Railroad extended its tracks from Boulder to Niwot. The early settlers who were farmers and ranchers benefited from the rail expansion which allowed them to ship agricultural goods to distant places. Niwot then became a railroad town and its population grew as a blacksmith shop, feed mill, general stores and living quarters began to sprout up around a station house that was located halfway between Boulder and Longmont.
A few of the town’s original buildings on the east side of the railroad track, designated as “Old Town” are part of the National Historic District and its there that the town celebrates its heritage in an annual Nostalgia Day complete with music, food and a parade through town.
